Me
I am a graduate of Birmingham and Brighton Universities with degrees and postgraduate degrees in Physics, Astrophysics, Computer Science and Education. I spent many years as a research associate at Birmingham University specialising in expert systems in medical applications. Eventually I left to work in commerical computer programming. A few more years and I left to take another degree this time a postgraduate degree in education specialising in secondary science education.

A couple of years after starting in education I had the opportunity to take over running the the planetarium for The Observatory at Herstmonceux as well as providing their higher level education content. As that is a charitable organisation I also moved into tutoring physics and maths up to A level and all science disciplines up to GCSE.

Tutoring can be at online, at the student's house or at my house. For sessions at my place parents / guardians can stay if they wish. Internet, coffee and biscuits are available. Typically tutorials are scheduled for a 60 minute slot but will often overrun. I will always be willing to let a session overrun rather than stop mid topic. If a session does overrun then I will not charge for the overrun, If a session underruns then I reduce the charge proportionately. In addition to the scheduled hour session I usually, but not always, send an email with additional notes and exercises for the student. I encourage students to attempt those and email me their answers before the next session as that makes the next session much more effective if we do not need to spend time going through material a student has demonstrated that they understand. That is included in the session cost.

For your peace of mind I hold a current DBS certificate and am a qualified first aider.

If a student cannot make a session for any reason then as long as I know before the session start then I will not charge, even if it is only 30 minutes notice. And that is any reason, I would rather reschedule than have a student attend when they have returned exhausted from a mountaineering trip or stress because their bus is stuck in traffic. If a student hasn`t let me know in advance and doesn`t show at the start of the session then if the session is at my place they can of course turn up late. If the session is online I leave the session open for 15 minutes to allow for problems.
